To many people this is one of the most difficult aspects of achieving your goal of finding a new job. Informing your line manager of your decision to leave can feel uncomfortable, maybe disloyal or like you're letting the company down. It is quite normal to feel like this. You must ensure that you follow some straight forward rules though.
DO
- Only resign when you have a firm offer of employment in writing from your new employer.
- Plan and prepare your resignation.
- Write a letter to give to your line manager and have a copy for the HR department also.
- Your letter should be brief thanking the business for its support during your tenure.
- If possible resign face to face with your line manager.
- Be polite, outline the reasons for your decision to leave and ask for a release date.
- Work hard through your notice period and have a positive attitude towards the business that has employed you.
DO NOT
- Do not resign unless the job offer is in writing, verbal offers are not legally binding.
- Never resign on impulse.
- Do not make unnecessarily negative comments about the business, colleagues or managers in the company. Be graceful in your resignation. However if there have been some issues that need addressing these should be fed back in a professional manner.
- Do not work through the notice period with a half hearted attitude; maintain the same level of professionalism you have shown throughout your tenure.
