It is very important to have an accurate CV that attracts potential employers. Prospective employers have to look at hundreds of CV's every week, and therefore it is important that you maximise the relevant information you include in a small space. Employers search this database for potential employees and may keep a database of those candidates who may be suitable in the future.
- Keep it relatively short - no more than 2 pages. Try to keep it to two pages.
- Be honest - This will ensure that the job you are offered is suitable for you, and maximise your chances of success in the role.
- Keep the front page simple and easy to read, and avoid using too many graphics, these will just end up being a distraction.
- Make sure you include contact information including address telephone numbers and e-mail address. You need to be contactable.
- Start with your most recent job and work backwards in chronological order.
- Include education information. This is particularly relevant if this is your first or second job, in which case this should appear before your work experience. Include dates, details of further education and any relevant training you may have had for example NVQ's and job-based training
- Make sure you declare all your positions and do not leave any gaps. You may have had a job for only a short period of time, but you must include it. Any attempt to cover up will always surface when an employer applies for a reference, and this will often result in any offer being withdrawn.
- Avoid jargon and acronyms that are specific to your particular company.
- Focus on your achievements as well as your responsibilities. For example how you have improved sales/service in your store/department, or how you have motivated your team.
- Keep information on hobbies etc to a minimum. However, if you are a school leaver or recent graduate, this information is more important as it tells a prospective employer more about you.
- Taylor your CV to the position you are applying for. For example talk about any achievements that may make you attractive to the employer. If you choose to use a standard CV, then you can include this information in a covering letter.
- If you include a covering letter keep it brief and to the point.
